Choose to Act

We have all seen images or firsthand evidence of light stations suffering under the weight of time. No matter the cause of this distress – be it at the hands of storms, neglect, vandalism or red tape, it is quite apparent that a number of these noble sites need salvation found only through a team of courageous friends.
Undoubtedly, calling attention to light stations amidst a slow fade has merit, but fate, forever lurking as it does, is not altered by words alone. In a way, the imperiled historic structures do not require layers of verbal articulation, for such a sorrowful countenance already speaks volumes to anyone who cast a glance in their direction.
Knowing a light station needs critical care is not enough. It’s not even the starting point. Yes, awareness offers us opportunity, but this knowledge is passive in nature. And that which is passive seldom stokes the flame of desire to any real level of sustainable achievement. The starting point is when we are moved within our spirit to begin – to embark on a rescue with resolve.
Determination! It changes the course of history every time! Holding the hand of determination is passionate activity. Action will change the fortune of an ailing light station – but not simply stand-alone action. Consistent and disciplined action is what ultimately blossoms into preservation excellence. Those who recognize this fact, do well. Those who act upon it, do even better.
To those special individuals who heed this call, I say this: People may or may not remember your name in the future to come. However, your dedicated action – taken at a time when a beloved light station needs it most, will assuredly be transformed into a triumph of care and deed that will shine through its guiding light that endures beyond.
Our lighthouse history is going to continue to unfold whether we sit idly by or swing into action. How this history manifests, is up to us. Choose today how to apply your time, talent and treasure. Choose to ACT!
